This choice intrigued Victor and he took it upon himself to “help” Eli with this thesis. He decided that they should become EO’s. Ten years later, they want the other dead. We follow Victor and Eli on the night they come head to head, their past, and we meet wonderful new characters (Mitch, Sydney, Serena, Dol). A thrilling ride from start to finish.

Gushing Review
OH MY GAWD! I still owe a review to this blog on the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. I’m getting to that. I finished the last book in the trilogy last weekend and I loved it. And after I finished reading it, I went into mourning. I picked up book after book after book, trying to figure out what to read next. Nothing felt right. Then I picked up Vicious.

How do I describe how much I love this book? I guess by just saying I love this book. I don’t think that’s good enough though. I feel like I need to do something. To show this book my appreciation. To show the author my appreciation. THIS. BOOK. RIGHT. HERE. Go buy it. Buy it for yourself. Buy it for a family member. Buy it for a friend. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I could be wrong. Everyone doesn’t have the same taste. There is a quote in the beginning of the book.

Life — the way it really is — is a battle not between Bad and Good, but between Bad and Worse.
– Joseph Brodsky

I feel like I’m rambling. I don’t even know what else to say. The main characters of this book are terrible people. Or maybe they just do terrible things. Doesn’t matter. I still love them. I will definitely be rereading this. Vicious is my favorite book I’ve read so far this year.

How Stephanie Perkins is Awesome — Book Review

How do I begin with all of this adorableness? We’ll do one book at a time. I was going to wait to review all of them when I got Isla in my hands. But I finished Lola this past week and my goodness, I wanted to rave about it.

 Short Summary :
Anna Oliphant is about to start her senior year of high school. Unfortunately, for her, that year will be spent at The School of America in Paris. She’s never been to France. She doesn’t speak the language. This wasn’t her idea. She’s going here because her father, a novelist, wants to show his friends how cultured he is. She will be leaving behind her best friend, her mom and little brother, her job at the movie theater, and her new crush that was just turning into something. On her first night in her dorm room, she panics and starts crying. Her neighbor hears her cries and this is when Anna meets Meredith. And through Meredith she makes other friends. She meets Josh, Rashmi, and Etienne St. Clair. She learns a lot about Paris, herself, and her true feelings for a certain good friend.

Short Summary
Lola Nolan has 3 wishes.
1) To attend the winter formal.
2) Her fathers to approve of her boyfriend Max.
3) To never ever see the Bell twins again.

Wish 3 does not come true for her when the Bell twins move back to town. This changes her world when she finds out the true feelings of Cricket Bell. Yes, she has a boyfriend, but this is Cricket Bell. Her first love. She must trust herself in learning her true feelings about Cricket as well as whether she should get close to her birth mother who makes an appearance into her life again.

Review:
LOVE! I loved these books. Anna and Lola’s stories were so adorable. The boys they fall in love with were just as adorable. How they became friends first instead of jumping down each other’s throats was refreshing. I did smile throughout both of these books, but there were some parts that made me smile even harder. When Anna got the girl scout cookies, I about screamed. Figure skating being apart of Lola’s life (I love figure skating). These are quick, cute, adorable, made of sunshine books that will keep a smile on your face. Highly recommended. Especially if a book hangover is involved. These will cheer you up.

I will be getting the next book (Isla) the day it comes out.

Ratings:
Anna and the French Kiss: 4.5/5
Lola and the Boy Next Door: 4.5/5

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon- Review

I’m going to start doing book reviews here. I mean, I have blog. Why not use it. I think I’m gonna go back to do reviews on some of the books I’ve already read this year as well. I might lump some books in together. Like The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy (going to read the 3rd book soon) or the Anna/Lola/Isla books by Stephanie Perkins. We’ll see. But first, I’ll start with The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. After I finished this book, I hugged it. That’s how much I liked it.

Short Summary
The story focuses on Paige Mahoney. She’s a 19 year old clairvoyant. People that are clairvoyant are considered “unnatural”. I want to say clairvoyance is frowned upon, but that is an understatement. She lives in London. It’s 2059 and London is under Scion law. Many cities are under this law as well. Paige works  in the criminal underworld and she is a part of a group called the Seven Seals. One day she gets kidnapped and is taken to the lost city of Oxford. There she learns why London is under Scion law and she is assigned to Warden. He is someone she doesn’t want to trust, but she may have to for her freedom.

Review

I really enjoyed this book. The main character did get on my nerves at times. She was really stubborn. But, I wondered what I would be like in her situation. Her freedom had been taken away from her. I really don’t know if I would have acted any differently. I enjoyed the secondary characters. Liss and Julian were good allies for Paige. Warden was awesome. I envisioned him as her guardian. He protected her even though she hated him. He had his reasons for it though. Nick was great. Jaxon can get punched in the face anytime soon. Michael was adorable.

I enjoyed the pacing of this story. I really didn’t want to put it down. I’m excited for the next book which just recently got pushed back to January 2015. That’s okay. I have so many other books I can read before then. I will definitely be buying the next one in this series the week it comes out.

In Which College Football Gives Me A Lecture

Sometimes the Big Ten Network and ESPN show reruns of college football games. I’m here for them. Especially in the summer time when I’m missing football the most. The thing is though, I’m supposed to be writing around the time there might be a game on that may be of interest. So I end up taking a break from writing and watching. Recently, the below exchange happened. And now these “classic” games will never feel the same.

College Football: What are you doing?

Me: huh?

College Football: What are you doing?

Me: I was just —

College Football: Stop it.

Me: *frowns* It’s only —

College Football: Aren’t you supposed to be writing?

Me: Yeah.

College Football: Aren’t you close to finishing this draft?

Me: Yeah.

CF: Then why are you watching us on ESPNU and BTN? These games are old. You’ve seen these games.

Me: I miss you?

CF: Is that a question?

Me:  No.

CF: Then why did you ask? Aren’t you supposed to be a writer?

Me: I don’t know.

CF: ……………………………………..

Me: …………………………………….

CF: Are we back to you feeling sorry for yourself?

Me: *blinks*

CF: You want to write, right?

ME: *laughs*

CF: *death stare*

Me: I’m sorry.

CF: I’ll ask again. Aren’t you supposed to be a writer?

Me: Yeah.

CF: ACT LIKE IT!

This either happened for real or just in my head. Actually, that’s the same thing. You don’t believe me? Ask Dumbledore.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”  — Professor Dumbledore

Resolutions Update

First: I had forgotten that this blog existed. I mean, I have been in the process of moving my podcast blog over to WordPress from Squarespace and I clicked on this blog. The last time I updated it was in 2008. That seems like forever ago. But, it felt like the perfect fit for my blog. I’ll have this as my personal blog and The Sports Diva Report stuff is over at http://thesportsdivareport.com right now if you want to check it out. Now back to the regular scheduled program.

Back in January, I made a blog post regarding my resolutions for 2014. Since its the halfway point, here are my updates.

1. Read more books!
Last year, I didn’t read as many books as I wanted. That will change this year. I’m just going to read and read and read. I’ll make sure to blog about all of my happy reading.

I am in fact reading more books! I’ve read 8 books so far, 5 of them being in the Harry Potter series. I’ve gotten back to reading on a regular basis and I love it.

2. Finish this novel and start my next one.
I’m excited about my writing right now. I actually haven’t been this excited about my writing before. Maybe that’s a good sign that I will actually finish something.

I’m still working on this one. At the beginning of the year, I was working on a novel that just wasn’t going anywhere for me. I started on a new one in April and am 18,000 words in. I am loving the characters and the story.

3. Blog more.
My blogging for the last few years has been abysmal. Seriously, I used to blog all the time. This won’t be an everyday blog. I can’t promise that. That promise would mostly get broken on the first day. I might even start vlogging again. Maybe. Possibly. If I do, you’ll know all about it on this site.

This has sort of happened. In migrating my blog posts over, I’ve separated the sports stuff out. Does podcasting work here? I consider podcasting working here. The podcast though is on hiatus. That is a whole other conversation. You can blame the book I’m writing for that.

4. Stop threatening to throw furniture/electronics during games.
I would have to say I’ve gotten better at this while I’m watching my favorite teams. I used to threaten throwing my computer out the window. Now I just give it a stern look. I will continue getting better.

I can honestly say that I haven’t….that I don’t remember threatening any furniture/electronics during games.

I think I’ve done pretty well with my resolutions. I also added on learning web development. HTML, CSS, javascript, and jquery have been learned by me. And I’m not done. We will see where this takes me.

Resolutions?

Happy New Year everyone! We are a few days into 2014. My Buckeye football team lost their bowl game, but there is no love lost. They played their hearts out and I love them for it. Who am I kidding. I would still love them if they were just standing there watching the game instead of making plays. Its recruiting season now. That reminds me, I need to request off recruiting day. This will be the second year in a row I would be taking that day off. Its a rather entertaining day. I need to make a reminder for myself to look up when it is.

Since it is the beginning of a new year, it is resolution time. I actually hadn’t thought about any resolutions before last year ended. I was too busy New Years Eve drinking hot cocoa, watching the ball drop, and trying to decipher if it was fireworks or gun shots I was hearing. Turned out to be fireworks in downtown Columbus. They were too low to take pictures of though. Lame. But now its time to make some resolutions. Now these are going to be resolutions that I believe I might actually be able to keep for the first half of this year. Making resolutions for the whole year right now just seems a bit too much for me. To much of a commitment. We’ll start with 6 months and see how it goes.

2013 Favorites

Happy New Year everyone! Well, its not the new year as of yet, but it will be soon. Very soon. I’ve been writing and writing and writing my novel. Haven’t given up on it. Still plugging away at my story. I didn’t get to 50,000 words with Nanowrimo. But I am continuing that story. In a different way though. Have multiple POVs now and changed to third person.

I’ll get back to working on this novel in a few. Even though its New Years Eve, I need to stick to my goal and get some writing done. But for now, I figured I’d come to my blog and talk about some of my favorite things from 2013. My favorite sports teams haven’t, and won’t, change so there is that (Go Bucks! Go Reds! and Who Dey!).

Favorite Book: The Night Circus
I know I’m late but I FINALLY read this book this year. Well, I listened to the audiobook. That counts though, right? I believe I downloaded the audiobook from Audible over a year ago but I never got around listening to it until this year. I also ended up getting the ebook because I wanted to re-read it in case I missed anything. I listened to this audiobook while I was at work mostly and I’ve re-listened too.
Honorable Mention: This is bad. I didn’t read that many books this past year but I plan to read a lot more next year. I promise. I will even do some sort of “book report” on this blog of the books I buy and read. I’m currently reading The Whole Golden World by Kristina Riggle. I will have my report once I’m finished.

Favorite Song: Royals by Lorde
I love this song. LOVE. This song, as well as her album, makes me feel like I’m sitting on the bus heading across the river to the west side in my hometown to the high school. I’ve listened to her album a lot. Especially while writing.
Honorable Mention: Hold On, We’re Going Home by Drake. I’ve never been the biggest Drake fan. When I first heard this song I found myself bobbin to it. And then downloading it. Then dancing.

Favorite Album: Pure Heroine by Lorde
This is my novels fault, mostly. Like I said, I’ve listened to this album a lot. Its kind of some sort of a muse for this novel that I’m writing. Especially the song Team.
Honorable Mention: has to go to Beyonce. Been listening to that a lot as of late and I can’t find a song I don’t like. I can find a bunch of songs that I love. I also liked Chrisette Michele, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and Janelle Monae’s albums.

Surprised I liked this Artist’s Music: One Direction
Seriously though, Midnight Memories is actually pretty good. Now I am in no way a directioner (?). I tried to listen to some of there older stuff and it didn’t work out so well. When I heard Story of My Life I was like, “Oh. I like that song.” Then I continued to listen to it and said, “Well then. This song is pretty great.” Then the album came out and it ended up on my iPhone. And it is still there. Little Black Dress is a nice song.
Honorable Mention: would go to Justin Bieber. I’m definitely surprised that his new music is on my phone.

Favorite Movie: Catching Fire
Went to the movie theater to see, I believe, 3 movies this past year. I think it was 3. It was definitely less than 5. The reason? The movie theater that I usually go to shut down for remodeling right before the summer. I know, right? How do you shut down a movie theater right before the summer? They apparently got new ownership and were supposed to have open back up at the end of August. They will actually re-open this upcoming January. I hope they didn’t ruin my favorite theater. I saw Catching Fire right before Thanksgiving and I enjoyed it very much. Liked it better than the first movie. Some people didn’t like the first one but I did. I really liked it.
Honorable Mention: Man of Steel.

Favorite TV Show: Sleepy Hollow.
I was excited when I found out about this show but skeptical that Fox would keep it because this is network TV after all and they don’t like letting things breath for some reason. So the next morning after I watched the first episode, I went straight to EW.com to make sure that other people watched it with me. And I found out they did. Yay!
onorable Mention: Doctor Who. I love this show. Love it so much. Last years Christmas special was great but the beginning of the second half of series 7 was okay. The finale, 50th, and this years Christmas special did their job though. They definitely did their job. Can’t wait until series 8 and more of our new doctor.

Favorite Social Network: Twitter
I don’t know if this will ever change. I love Twitter. I love it a lot. I love it so so much. It is my favorite. Come hang out with me there! @thesportsdiva.
onorable Mention: Tumblr. I love going on here and finding just about anything. Especially following along during Doctor Who.

Favorite Video Game: GTA V
I never finish video games. Actually, that is a lie. It takes me forever to finish video games. Maybe that will change one day but I’m not in any hurry to change that. I haven’t finished GTA V. I haven’t finished Bioshock Infinite. I blame the part I’m stuck on for not finishing Bioshock. I blame the open worldliness for why I haven’t finished GTA V. I’m having too much fun running from the cops! And doing all the other things I can’t do in real life. I haven’t played it in a while since I started on my novel but I may have to spare an hour at least this weekend. I need to get these guys into more trouble.
Honorable Mention: Bioshock Infinite. Now if only I can get passed the part I got stuck on. Its been a while, I don’t really remember how to play. One day I’ll pick it back up and play.

Favorite Youtuber: DailyGrace (Grace Helbig)
She’s pretty great. I think it was last year when I said she was my favorite youtuber and that hasn’t changed. She makes me laugh and continue to laugh. My favorite is when she teaches us how to cook.
Honorable Mention: iJustine. I have to say, I’ve been watching her videos for years and I haven’t gotten bored. I also watched her show on AOL this year. It might help that she’s dating a Buckeye and all but she’s pretty entertaining. Her cooking videos are becoming a fave of mine as well. Although, I wouldn’t eat anything she makes.

That is that! Now everyone have a Happy New Year. And I will leave you with my favorite Carlos Hyde (Ohio State running back) moment of 2013.
